Programs Overview
These two programs are for our youngest skaters and are called "blue puck" levels because they use a lightweight blue hockey puck.
6U Cross-Ice is an on-ice program for players ages 6 and younger that either already have a little skating experience & confidence or that seem like they might do well with a little bit more ice time each week and competitive local games that the Learn to Play level doesn't offer. Slightly older new skaters (say 7-year-olds) that don't feel good jumping to U8 RWB hockey might start here by request.
8U Red, White & Blue (formerly Mites) is for skaters aged 7- and 8-years. The three colors represent three development tiers to provide an appropriate skill-level experience for each skater.
New this year: Middleton Youth Hockey wants your new skater to try hockey! We're proud to offer the first session for free to brand-new hockey players. More info below.
Register your Skater
If you have a brand-new skater to register, please email our 6U Cross-Ice and 8U RWB Director, Danny Schneider, prior to registering to introduce yourself and request a website code to make your skater's first session with MYH free! This promo is only for new skaters.
1) Register your player with USA Hockey. This is required annually.
2) Log into (or create) your family MYH CrossBar account.
3) Register your player for the season with MYH in CrossBar.
4) Download the free CrossBar mobile app (which pairs with our website and will provide access to schedules, communication tools, etc.) from your favorite mobile app store. Here are the links to the Apple Store version & Google Play version.
5) Sort equipment for the season. Locally, Play-it-Again Sports, Pure Hockey, Facebook Marketplace, and Sideline Swap are great places to start your search for new & used hockey gear.*
6) If you'd like other family members to receive MYH emails and access your skater's schedule & admin panel - create a CrossBar account for them and then link them to the account where you administer the youth hockey players in your family.
*All youth hockey players will need an approved neck protector this season due to USA Hockey changes - you must have this for the first practice.

The Season: 2 Sessions
Cross-Ice and RWB programs offer two sessions during the winter season:
Session 1 begins in mid-October and ends near the December holidays.
Session 2 begins with the New Year and ends in early March.
We offer two sessions to provide scheduling and financial flexibility for our youngest hockey families. Your player is certainly welcome to register for both sessions right away!
Read MoreThere are three ways to register this winter: register for Session 1, which begins late autumn and goes until the late December holiday break, Session 2, which starts at New Year and goes until March, or both Session 1 & 2 together to make a full season.
If you intend to have your player skate both Sessions 1 & 2 - the easiest route forward with our registration software is to book the full season now. If you only book Session 1, intending to book Session 2 later, the route forward is a bit of a work-around.
Program Fees
Cross-Ice: $140 for one session or $280 for the full season.
Red, White & Blue: Session 1 is $250. Session 2 is $350 as it includes a tournament. You can register for the full season for $600.

We're proud to offer the first session for free to brand new hockey players (not available if you've previously played organized hockey or LTP). For your first session discount code, please email your Cross-Ice or RWB Age Level Director, introduce yourself, and we'll be thrilled to assist you in registering for hockey. If your new player wants to register for both sessions (a full winter season), we'll provide a code for half off of the entire registration (not including any RWB tournament fees).
*RWB Session 2 or RWB Full Season registration includes the fee for one tournament.
*Additional RWB tournaments are optional but would require additional fees later in the season.
*RWB families are required to pay a volunteer deposit until they've met their required volunteering hours.
Hockey Locations
Practices are held at Bob Suter's Legacy20 Arena in Middleton (aka Capitol Ice Arena) with the possibility of a practice at another local rink as needed (rarely).
Games are primarily local to Dane County.
Practices
Cross-Ice tends to practice on Saturday mornings. RWB generally practices twice a week during Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Games
Cross-Ice and RWB hockey emphasize fun and development with smaller teams and local games in the Dane County League.
Read MoreCross-Ice plays a game most Sundays and breaks the rink into 1/3rds where they play across the rink instead of the length of it (hence Cross-Ice). In addition to breaking the ice into thirds, an hour-long game is also broken up into three mini games where our teams will play 3 of the teams attending any Sunday game.
RWB play half-ice games throughout the season and generally play X number of games each weekend. Like Cross-Ice, Mite games are broken into mini games that allow our teams to play 2 different teams per full "game".
RWB teams play a weekend tournament regionally and parents often have the option to pay for additional tournaments.
Rental Equipment
Do you have young athletes interested in playing ice hockey but don't want to commit to buying all the expensive gear? Take advantage of our gear rental program aimed at our youngest skaters!
Read MoreHow much does the gear loan program cost?
A $150 deposit is required for a youth gear bag for the season. A portion of that $150 deposit, depending upon your player's age, will be returned to you at the end of the season once the rental gear is returned to MYH.
Cross Ice: $125 will be refunded.
Red, White & Blue: $100 will be refunded.
We do it this way because bigger kids are just much harder on gear. This allows us to replace, repair or upgrade safety gear as needed.
What hockey gear is included in our gear loan program?
- Shin pads, hockey pants, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, helmet.
- All programs include practice jerseys.
What gear is not included in the gear loan program?
- Skates, hockey tape, hockey socks to go over shin pads, hockey shorts or garter to hold up hockey socks.
- Hockey stick (should be cut to the height of your player's nose when standing barefoot)
These essential items can generally be purchased at Play-It-Again Sports, Dick's, Gold Medal Sports, Pure Hockey, or other online hockey retailers.
How do I sign up and receive the gear for my skater?
Select the rental gear option during your player registration process. You will be contacted prior to the season with gear pick up time options. We strongly encourage you to bring your hockey player along to gear pickup to ensure proper fit of all equipment. Our storage unit is at Tuck-A-Way storage, 2315 Pinehurst (just south of Suter's Legacy20 Ice Arena).
What if I have gear questions?
Any questions regarding hockey gear or jerseys can be directed to our Equipment Director.
Team Placement
Cross-Ice coaches and admin informally build balanced teams for the season after a few practices. Red, White, and Blue teams are split into skill and development tiers (RWB) by the coaching staff after observing the skaters during the first several weeks of practices.
Read MoreRWB coaches build teams by player skill & development level but unlike the squirt hockey level and higher, mites will not participate in an official evaluation/try-out process.
Please keep in mind that our volunteer coaches and admin want the very best possible outcomes for every single MYH skater.
Girls Hockey
If enough Red, White & Blue families support offering a girls-only mites team again this winter - we will build one and try to place it at the correct level of competition. We had a very successful girls-only RWB campaign last winter!
In Cross-Ice, girls and boys play on co-ed teams.
Volunteering
The Middleton Youth Hockey club only functions due to the hard work and energy of our volunteers. Our parents, coaches, managers, board members, and other unpaid volunteers are what keep quality ice hockey happening for Middleton kids.
In order to keep our club, hockey games, and teams functioning and our fees to play hockey as low as we can, each family (at mite-level and above) are required to volunteer 7 hours for a single skaters or 12 hours for a multi-skater family. The volunteer deposit is $200 for one skater and $400 total for two or more skaters. If you meet the required hours, your deposit is fully returned to you at the end of the season. If you DO NOT meet the volunteering requirements for the season, the club will keep your volunteering buyout money to improve the club, pay for ice time, replace rental gear, etc.
Read MoreBeyond required hours, we're always, always, always looking for more help to improve our programs, the quality of education & competition we can offer our hockey players, communication with our hockey families & community, and more!
We understand that your families are super busy. We know hockey is expensive. We understand that you work, run a household, care for family members, volunteer elsewhere, and so much more! If you think that you might be able to find a few extra hours during the hockey season (or off-season) to help us improve Middleton Youth Hockey - we would love to know more. Please tell us a little bit more about what interests or excites you when you think about volunteering to improve our ability to serve our hockey players and our community! Email president@middletonyouthhockey.com to learn more. Thank you!
You can learn more about volunteering with Middleton Youth Hockey here.
Jerseys
Red and black practice jerseys, which are also used during games, are provided at both levels. Players will need to source their own black or red hockey socks to wear over their shin pads.
Please email gear@middletonyouthhockey.com with any questions.
