Student Coaches
Be the player younger Cardinals look up to.
If you're 13-17 years old, love hockey, and want to help us make Middleton Youth Hockey a better place for all, become a Middleton Youth Hockey Student Coach!
You don't need to be a perfect hockey player or a future PWHL or NHL coach. You need to be a present and positive role model who is willing to help younger kids learn and have fun.
Why become a Student Coach?
Student coaches will:
🏒 Help younger players fall in love with hockey.
🏒 Build leadership, communication and teaching skills.
🏒 Learn more about the game by teaching it to someone else.
🏒 Gain valuable experience if you might want to coach someday.
🏒 Be a positive role model for younger Cardinals.
🏒 Give back to the Middleton hockey community.
And you get to spend more time on your skates!
Who can be a Student Coach?
USA Hockey allows players ages 13–17 who are properly registered with USA Hockey to serve as Student Coaches.
Student Coaches must:
🏒 Be registered with USA Hockey as a player.
🏒 Email the ACE Director and let MYH know you're interested. When you do, please include a parent or guardian in the recipients.
🏒 Review MYH's Student Coach orientation (attached below).
🏒 Complete the USA Hockey Student Coach form.
🏒 Complete MYH's brief Student Coach registration (linked to this page).
🏒 Work with players at least one full playing-age level below their own.
🏒 Work under the supervision of a credentialed adult MYH coach at all times.
Student Coaches must be approved and properly rostered by the ACE Director before participating as MYH Student Coaches. Student Coaches do not need to complete the normal USA Hockey coaching certification program. They may audit an appropriate coaching clinic, but it does not count as certification.
What Can Student Coaches do?
Student Coaches can help with:
🏒 Practices
🏒 Skills stations and demonstrations
🏒 Small-area games and activities
🏒 Clinics
🏒 Tryouts and player-development activities
Student Coaches can't serve as a head or assistant coach, and they cannot participate as a player in scrimmages or games while serving as a Student Coach.
When on the ice, Student Coaches must wear a helmet with a full face shield, neck protection, gloves, and skates.
Ready to give it a shot, coach?
